The weekend search in Bonussøk: see which cities have award seats this weekend

· · 3 min read · updated

The weekend trip is the most underrated use of award points. It costs few points, and you can do it several times a year. The trouble is that everyone wants to fly out Friday and home Sunday, and that is exactly when seats are hardest to get. The weekend search is made to solve precisely that.

What it does

Instead of picking a weekend and crossing your fingers, the weekend search shows which destinations have available award seats on the coming weekends. You flip the question from “is this weekend open to Berlin” to “where can I go this weekend”. The second question is much easier to get a yes to.

How to use it

You choose which airport you are flying from, and then set up the weekend the way you want it:

  • Departure day and return day, for example out Friday and home Sunday, or out Thursday and home Monday if you want a longer weekend.
  • Which week, from this weekend and several weeks ahead, so you can look for a weekend that fits your calendar.

Then the tool searches, and you get a list of destinations that actually have seats on those days. You pick the one that appeals to you, rather than hunting through city after city.

Why it works

When you are open to several cities, you do not have to hit the bullseye on one route. If Berlin has no seats but Munich has two, you go to Munich. The weekend search puts the destinations in front of you as ready-made suggestions, so you choose the one that actually has space.

A small tip: if you dare to flex one day, a lot more opens up. A trip Thursday to Sunday, or Friday to Monday, is often wide open when the classic Friday to Sunday is full. There is more on this in the guide on weekend trips on points.

Who it is for

This is for you when you just want to get away for a weekend and are not too fussed about where. If you live in a city with good SAS coverage and fancy a spontaneous city break, the weekend search is the quickest path from “I have points” to “I have booked”.

If you have a particular city in mind instead, the standard search or the flexible search is better. And if you are planning a longer trip for the summer, take a look at the summer holiday search.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose days other than Friday to Sunday? Yes. You set the departure and return day yourself, so a long weekend Thursday to Monday is just as easy.

How many weeks ahead can I see? You can page several weeks ahead from the current weekend, so you find a weekend that fits.

Why does the weekend search find seats when a regular search does not? Because you see several destinations at once. You do not depend on one particular city having space.
