What is a Companion Ticket? The SAS EuroBonus 2-for-1, explained
A Companion Ticket might be the single most valuable benefit in all of EuroBonus, and also the one people understand least. SAS officially calls it the Amex 2-for-1 voucher, but most people just say Companion Ticket. Either way it does one thing: it lets two people travel on an award ticket while you only pay points for one.
What it actually does
With a Companion Ticket you book an award ticket for two people, but the points price is charged for only one. The second traveller flies essentially free on points. You still pay taxes and fees for both, but the points cost is cut in half.
An example makes the value obvious. A round trip in Business Class that costs 120,000 points per person would normally run 240,000 points for two. With a Companion Ticket you pay 120,000 for both. That is 120,000 points saved on a single booking, easily worth more than ten thousand kroner in points value. It is why a lot of people hold the voucher for exactly this: a long-haul Business seat.
How you get one
The Companion Ticket comes with the SAS EuroBonus American Express cards, both Premium and Elite. You earn it by spending enough on the card during the year to reach a set threshold. Once you hit it, the voucher appears on your account.
Worth knowing for Nordic readers: Amex is offered in Norway and Sweden but not Denmark. If you live in Denmark and use a Mastercard, you unfortunately do not have access to this voucher.
Which cabin you can book
The cabin depends on which card you hold:
- The Premium card gives a voucher for Economy and Premium Economy. Since April 2025 the Premium voucher no longer covers Business.
- The Elite card also covers Business Class, which is where the value is greatest.
- Both can be used for Premium Economy on SkyTeam partners, not just SAS.
The rules to know
- One voucher per booking, and the booking can have at most two travellers.
- The voucher owner can book for family or friends, but the points are deducted from the account that received the voucher.
- Taxes and fees apply on top of the points price, for both travellers.
- The voucher is valid from when you receive it until the end of the following calendar year. The booking must be made before it expires, but the trip itself can be after. Check the current terms with SAS, since they get adjusted from time to time.
The catch is the usual one
A Companion Ticket does not solve the hardest problem: you still need award seats available for two people on the same flight. The voucher is worth a fortune, but only if you find two seats to use it on, and two seats are scarcer than one. That means being flexible on dates and searching early.
This is where a search tool earns its keep. The Bonussøk search lets you check availability for the number of travellers you actually have, so you find flights with two open award seats instead of discovering there was only one. And because pairs of seats are rare, Bonusvarsleren can email you when enough seats open on the route you want to use the voucher on.
In short
The Companion Ticket is the closest EuroBonus comes to a free trip for two. Get an Amex card that grants one, save the voucher for an expensive Business ticket, and use a search tool to find two seats on the same flight. That is how you get the most out of the program’s most valuable benefit.
